Why the Altec 1588C Stands Out
The 1588C shines because of its simple yet powerful design. It features a transistor-based circuit with transformer-coupled input and output, delivering around 34 dB of gain. This setup produces a warm, smooth tone while amplifying signals efficiently. The input transformer adds harmonic richness, creating the preamp’s signature sound that engineers love for vocals, guitars, and more.
When pushed, the 1588C adds creamy saturation and subtle distortion, enhancing the character of audio tracks. Despite its compact size, it’s a powerhouse for creating analog warmth and depth.
Versatile and Reliable
Originally designed for mixers, PA systems, and broadcast consoles, the 1588C was built for versatility. Its octal base made it easy to swap or integrate into various systems. Over the years, its rugged construction and reliable performance made it a trusted tool in studios and live settings alike.
Today, it’s still highly valued. Collectors, DIY enthusiasts, and audio professionals often repurpose it into standalone builds or rack-mounted designs. The 1588C remains a top choice for adding vintage character to recordings.
Reviving the Legacy: BAT’s Modern 500 Series 1588C
At British Audio Technologies, we’ve modernized the Altec 1588C into a 500 series version built for today’s studios. Our redesign offers 55 dB of gain, 1 watt resistors, signal/clip led, phantom power and includes premium Cinemag transformers for superior sound quality. We’ve added a gain attenuator trim for precise control over coloration, along with an output fader potentiometer connected to the secondary winding of the output transformer. This setup provides additional tonal flexibility, allowing you to adjust the level of coloration and control how hard the Altec drives any equipment connected to it.
These updates give users more control over tone, letting you explore a wide range of colors, saturations, and harmonic distortions. Whether you need subtle warmth or bold saturation, this preamp delivers.
